CHAPTER 9

AISLINN

I practically see the smoke rising from Taylor's ears.

I reach out under the table and rest my hand on his leg. I know he's freaking out. I get it, but I also know people.

And, okay, Maluga is a goblin. She's a different species and part of a different society, but I read Murrgh just fine. I'm ninety-nine percent sure I can read Maluga too.

I've also done dirty jobs long enough to know when someone is dangerous and when they’re not.

Maluga isn’t dangerous. It just radiates off of her.

And she's the kind of person who expects honesty, so I don't want to lie to her. I didn't miss the fact when Murrgh told his crazy story about us saving him, Maluga never doubted him for a moment.

She knew everything he said was true because she'd raised him that way.

Maluga rewards my faith with a nod and a smile.

"I do know of it. My husband told me they'd brought it in last night. To the king's armory. I think they plan to learn more about it. They didn't call it what you did. They only called it the spear, but they knew it was important, or they wouldn't have brought it to Olek's armory.

"Hang on a moment," Maluga says. "I can draw you a map.”

Maluga gets up and scrounges around until she finds pen and paper.

Taylor’s mouth hangs open. I figured he was about to tackle Maluga over the table and do some kind of jiu jitsu on the poor woman, but she's all right.

Hell, she might even be an ally.

"My husband," Maluga says as she sits down again and begins to draw, "works at the weapons mill as a guard. It's near the armory, so that's how he heard about the spear. I can't tell you how grateful I am for what you did for my son. My husband would be very grateful too."

She lets it hang in the air between us. Taylor rolls up the map and sticks it in his hip pocket. He gives Maluga a long look and then nods.

"We appreciate your gratitude," he says, "but I could never ask you to betray King Olek and put your life and the lives of your family in danger. You've already done more than enough."

He said exactly what I was going to say, but I'm touched hearing it from him. Taylor has a real heart he won't compromise on, even for a mission. He realizes me looking at him and gazes back. The space between us seems suddenly too small, too tight. I feel the heat coming off of him. There's plenty coming off of me, too.

I make the mistake of glancing at his lips, which are rich and full and surrounded by a bit of rough stubble that looks sexy as hell on him.

It makes me think of the kiss he gave me back by the cliffs and how much I desperately wanted it to continue. I've never had a hunger for a man like that, a desire to have him.
